Our Primary Practice

Attorney placement is the center of the firm.

Ninety percent of our work is legal: associate attorneys, of counsel, and partners for firms from mid-size practices through the AM Law 100, and in-house counsel at Fortune 500 companies. Our recruiters know lateral compensation, book portability, and the difference between a firm where a lateral thrives and one where they leave in two years.

On Our Approach

Culture and skillset are equally important for long-term success.

These apply to every search we run, whether it’s a law firm lateral or a hire in one of our other practices.

  1. We're selective about the searches we take on.

When the compensation, timeline, or candidate market can't support a credible search, we say so before either side invests time. Our team regularly declines engagements where a firm's requirements don't align with current market demand.

  2. We interview more attorneys than we present.

Every attorney we present has already been interviewed on practice depth, book portability, and cultural fit. Clients meet a short list, not a long one.

  3. We stay through offer and the first ninety days.

Lateral moves fail in the weeks after an offer is extended, not before. We work through counter-offers, start-date logistics, and onboarding, because the alternative costs significantly more than any search fee.

What we’re seeing in current engagements

01
On the clerkship bonus race
April 2026

Susman Godfrey is paying $180,000 for a single federal clerkship. Quinn Emanuel is at $175,000. Cravath sits at $125,000–$150,000. The Cravath base scale hasn't moved since 2024, but the effective first-year package for a top litigation lateral coming out of a federal clerkship now exceeds $600,000 total. Firms that aren't competing at that level are losing the conversation before it starts.

02
On partner lateral volume
April 2026

3,009 partner laterals completed in 2025, the highest since 2021, up 10% year-over-year. The current driver isn't compensation; it's the merger wave. Four major combinations have been announced in 2026 alone. Partners in overlapping practice groups are being displaced or reconsidering, and the firms absorbing them are hiring fast. We're seeing firms discount stated portable-book figures by 30% upfront, and due diligence on portability is harder than it's ever been.

03
On AI and headcount
April 2026

Baker McKenzie cut 600–1,000 business services staff citing AI. That headline is doing a lot of work. Total U.S. legal services employment hit 1.24 million in January 2026, the highest in a decade. What's actually shifting: support roles in knowledge management, legal admin, and junior research are contracting. Meanwhile, lateral hires with AI specialization grew 106% at Am Law 200 firms in the past year. The pattern is a reallocation, not a collapse.
